Olympics 2012 London – Preparedness Concerns

With the Olympics 2012 scheduled to be held in London, an urgent need to provide faster ‎and safer mobile communications network before hosting the event has become a ‎priority. High costs and threats of security from terror organizations had hampered the ‎progress in this vital issue.‎

No contract has been finalized for providing the mobile network. Huawei from China is ‎said to be the only equipment provider in the running at present. Huawei is prepared to ‎undersell their hardware in a bid to enter the UK market. The projected cost of the entire ‎system would exceed £100m, and all the operators would have to bear a large portion of ‎the costs. ‎

Transport for London is planning to provide mobile phone services on the deep Tube ‎network. Thales, along with UK’s mobile partners would install and maintain the system. ‎TfL budgets being low, mobile operators have to meet the requirements with no cost to ‎fare- or taxpayers. The task has to be undertaken and also finished before the deadline of ‎March, 2012.‎

Huawei has to provide equipments that can be shared on the network, and which ‎could be perused by all mobile operators.‎
