NSA’s New Data Center Coming Up At Utah

National Security Administration had announced their decision to construct a 1.5-million-square-foot Utah Data Center, at Fort Williams in Utah in the year 2009. A joint venture team led by DPR Construction, Balfour Beatty Construction and Big-D Construction would be constructing the new facility.
The US Army Corps of Engineers and NSA jointly hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for their new Intelligence Community Comprehensive National Cyber-security Initiative Data Center.
About 5,000 to 10,000 people would be involved during the construction and development phase. Once completed, the Data Center would support 100 to 200 permanent employees. The data center would offer 100,000 square feet of data center space and over 900,000 square feet for accommodating technical and administrative personnel. Support facilities like electrical substation, vehicle inspection facilities, visitor area control center, a chiller plant, fuel and water storage would be available. The construction is likely to be over by October 2013. Although 38 destinations were considered for locating the project, Utah was considered the most suitable site.
Lower energy costs, good internet infrastructure, thriving software industry and proximity to the Salt Lake City International Airport were all considered carefully before selecting Utah. The new NSA data center is part of the White House’s Comprehensive National Security Initiative, designed to boost cyber security and to safeguard federal computer networks.
