Mobile Devices Facing Increased Malware Threats
Smartphones and tablets have captured the electronics market the world over, but there is also a dark side to this development. Viruses on the mobile applications have increased, 2010 saw a steep increase in malware on mobile devices, up 46 percent from 2009.
The increase in mobile malware was on the cards, with smart-phones becoming more popular in every market segment. Smart-phones recently surpassed Personal Computers in sales for the first time ever. Symbian carried the highest risk on a mobile platform, and Android based devices are being challenged along with iPhones.
The mobile malware was growing exponentially year-over-year for sometime. Smart-phones have almost become mobile computers. With growing numbers, mobile malware was also getting more sophisticated. Viruses that infect cell phones typically force the phone to send texts or make calls to specific numbers and at specific times enabling the malware creator to rejoice. Now that phones are capable of so much more, the viruses that infect them are following suit.
Criminal minds deploy dubious methods to satiate their evil designs. Mischievous people with the ability to infect the phones do not hesitate to build botnet infrastructure. They want to establish their command and control over phones in a wicked way.
