Intel Reaffirms MeeGo Commitment

Although Nokia has chosen a new path to partner with Microsoft to install Windows ‎Phone 7 mobile operating system as Nokia’s primary smart-phone platform to move ‎forward, Intel is still of the opinion that the MeeGo operating system, which powered ‎Nokia’s mobile devices, had still a long way to go, since the system continues to be an ‎open, operator-friendly operating system. MeeGo would power tablets scheduled to ship ‎later this year, with the operating system also featuring in mobile phones and embedded ‎devices.‎

MeeGo was jointly introduced last year by Nokia and Intel at the World Congress event. ‎and was a result of Nokia’s earlier Maemo and Intel’s earlier Moblin efforts. MeeGo was ‎positioned to power all of Nokia’s future high-end devices. Now with the new ‎Nokia/Microsoft alliance, the platform has become an open-source project, with emphasis ‎on long-term market study relating to new devices, application platforms and user ‎friendly approaches. Nokia also had the option to continue the MeeGo-related product ‎relationship or to explore other options also without writing off the Operating system ‎abruptly. If required, Intel would approach new partners, as MeeGo was an open eco ‎system, and carriers also wanted a third eco system to have an edge over closed eco ‎systems.‎
