Google’s E-Book Venture

Google is set to release its much touted and delayed e-book venture shortly. Google, having now crossed many technical and legal hurdles, would be releasing Google Editions by year end in America and internationally in the next quarter. In order to break the legal jinx that the venture would throw up on its release, Google has already entered into workable contracts with independent booksellers and publishers as a precautionary measure to avoid later complications.

Google’s open, read from anywhere model is unique and different from other models like the Kindle device of Amazon.com, which is the current market leader in the segment.  Google’s offering can be accessed from anywhere on any web browsing device, made available through their online platform, which makes it simpler and readily available. Details of the planned revenue sharing system with retailers is a closely guarded secret. However, the very presence of Google is expected to boost e-publishing sales to triple the market size to almost $966 million, according to experts. By leveraging each segment of the market through their online cross linking strategy, Google intends to hook up the whole internet crazy fraternity and extend the Google Edition to the areas of their choice. As the technology is independent of the devices, a large market is now wide open to be exploited. Google is also making available most of the editions online, some of which will be offered free to users.

The only snag appears to be loyalty to established practices in e-purchasing of e-books. Google has no experience in this, but their prowess in the marketing of advertisement space would offer their competition the jitters. But new entrepreneurs are bound to catch up in the relatively new digital marketplace to earn their truly right share of the promising market. However, with the entry of many online portable devices and options, the market is set to grow and also target the common man. Early adoption to market trends is the new mantra for growth in these testing times.
