Data Centers built in 2010 – a recap
New Data Center construction work was brisk throughout 2010. Given below are significant landmarks of Construction activity during the bygone year:
Wholesale data center operator Digital Realty Trust planned to develop over 1,70,000 sft of space in five growing markets. (53,000 in New Jersey, 34,000 in London, 30,000 in Northern Virginia, over 22,000 in San Francisco, and 33,000 in Dallas)
The company also acquired five data centers in California, Arizona, Virginia from Rockwood Capital/365 Main, adding 919,000 square feet of data center space.
Digital Realty Trust acquired international facilities and later leased the properties to other IT companies.
Terremark purchased 27 acres of land adjacent to its data center campus, also began to construct their third 50,000 square-foot data center at the campus, and opened their Amsterdam campus with 25,000 square feet of colocation space. Terremark would expand its Brasil facility in Sao Paulo, Miami data center, Santa Clara data center in 2011.
Google (Finland), Yahoo and Microsoft were also developing their data centers in 2010.
Yahoo opened a new 180,000 square-foot data center in La Vista, Nebraska.
Yahoo opened an energy-efficient data center in Lockport, Niagara County, New York. Yahoo began construction on a new data center in Avenches, Switzerland.
Microsoft was planning one data center in Mecklenburg County, Virginia
Apple would complete their $1 billion data center in Maiden, North Carolina.
Online auction site eBay opened a data center in South Jordan, Utah
Facebook began construction of a data center in Prineville, Oregon
Twitter began constructing its own, custom-built data center in the Salt Lake City
PEER 1 opened its new data center in Toronto, Canada.
