Consumer Shift Preferences To Cost Advantage
Consumers are shifting to the cloud service providers for their data storage; hence it makes sense to save money by getting versions that have less on-device storage. Hence devices like the iPad, having many data applications stored on board, can as well shift to cloud based operating systems, with options for on-device storage and make them available at lower price points.
The trend of purchasing mobile with fewer applications has caught on. Manufacturers have already resorted to using devices with low-capacity SSDs, and NAND flash memory on board. Many reputed vendors have started offering low capacity, less price models since last year. Look at the value proposition in savings: SSDs retailing for about $100, in comparison with higher GB versions costing five times over. For example, Intel’s 40GB X25-V SSD that sells for for $92.
Lower priced mobile devices using cloud based services are best suited for the lower and middle income groups. Similarly the mobile applications specifically targeted for different end uses like market surveys and news, research or travel related requirements with fewer applications on board could be a blessing in disguise for the relevant consumer. The employer may restrict his purchase options based on his specific needs and procure just the required number of models for the intended end-use like surveys or event management.
