Certain Forms Of Amoeba Capable Of Harvesting Food

According to a report in ‘Nature’, researchers from Rice University have discovered ‎that amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum is capable of dispersing seeds and later selectively ‎harvesting the crop.

This variety of amoeba is found to live in soil throughout America ‎and other parts of the globe. These amoeba farm the bacteria that they prefer to eat. One-‎third of the amoeba, branded as farmers, carry bacteria with them to sow. This is ‎particularly advantageous in situations where food is not available, to these amoeba ‎farmers. Without consuming everything they carry, they tend to carry over some for a ‎later occasion. Future generations of these amoeba, capable of reproducing both sexually ‎and asexually stand to benefit. This may also be a cause that certain intrusive amoeba ‎continue to remain longer in chronically infected persons‎
