Certain Forms Of Amoeba Capable Of Harvesting Food
According to a report in ‘Nature’, researchers from Rice University have discovered that amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum is capable of dispersing seeds and later selectively harvesting the crop.
This variety of amoeba is found to live in soil throughout America and other parts of the globe. These amoeba farm the bacteria that they prefer to eat. One-third of the amoeba, branded as farmers, carry bacteria with them to sow. This is particularly advantageous in situations where food is not available, to these amoeba farmers. Without consuming everything they carry, they tend to carry over some for a later occasion. Future generations of these amoeba, capable of reproducing both sexually and asexually stand to benefit. This may also be a cause that certain intrusive amoeba continue to remain longer in chronically infected persons
