Yahoo is planning to invest $500 million to expand their data center infrastructure. The ‎existing data centers in the states of Buffalo, Omaha and Washington would see a major ‎overhaul and new facilities established in Switzerland and Singapore.‎

Approval to build new data centers at an investment of half a billion dollars has already ‎been obtained. Yahoo would move over to these highly efficient facilities in due course. ‎Yahoo had come out with their Yahoo Computing Coop last year, a design that replaces ‎mechanical cooling with factory-built components relying on fresh air.‎

Yahoo inaugurated their 155,000-square-foot data center facility based on the Yahoo’s ‎Computing Coop. design at Lockport, New York recently. The facility recorded a power ‎usage effectiveness of 1.08, as against the industry average of 1.92.‎

The construction of their Switzerland data center at Avenches had begun. This facility ‎would also have a similar low PUE rating. The Switzerland facility would incorporate the ‎YCC design while retrofitting an existing building, the first to implement a retrofit YCC ‎design. Around 20 smaller data centers would be built to function as ‘edge pods’, ie data ‎centers used to store content located adjacent to users, to support caching and content ‎delivery functions.‎

The new data centers would be built at costs averaging a little less than $5 million ‎per megawatt of electric power, which in turn translates into an addition of 100 ‎megawatts of capacity for Yahoo’s data center expansion plans.‎

Miva Merchant , a Web hosting provider has acquired fellow hosting provider ‎Hostasaurus for an unrevealed sum. As a result, Hostasaurus will now offer products and ‎services under the Miva Merchant brand.‎

The entire customers owing allegiance to Hostasaurus would continue to avail features ‎without any change in prices. In a few months, the services would be upgraded with their ‎new consolidated server control panel and Miva Merchant SaaS hosting plans. The ‎pricing would be based on the current Miva Merchant hosting offerings and pricing, and ‎the migrations would be taken up on a site-by-site basis.‎ Customers would be informed in advance about any scheduled downtime or server based ‎changes that could impact their site.

Co-founder of Hostasaurus, David Hubbard, has ‎taken over as the chief information officer of Miva Merchant who would work with ‎Jennifer Ferraz, now senior VP of hosting services.‎ The two would lead the Miva Merchant SaaS platform. The services include PCI service ‎provider certification, network architecture planning, and future infrastructure growth ‎initiatives.‎

The quality and service that characterized Hostasaurus in the Miva Merchant ecommerce ‎community would be persistently maintained.‎ The merger is a real win-win situation for all their combined customers, ‎allowing Hostasaurus to focus on the underlying architecture. The ‎combined customer base would have more access and hands-on ‎support from Miva Merchant’s dedicated support team.‎

A British explorer who walked along the entire length of the Amazon River has been ‎honored by bestowing the title of ‘European Adventurer of the Year’.‎

Ed Stafford, 35, Former Army officer finally reached the mouth of the Amazon river in ‎Brazil in August last year, after 859 days of grueling and painstaking efforts, from the ‎day he set off in his path following the Amazon River from the point of the river’s origin, ‎located high in the mountains of Peru.‎

All along the way he encountered poisonous snakes, electric eels and piranhas, and other ‎creepers, creatures and insects. He was wrongly accused of murder and chased by local ‎tribesmen armed with shotguns and bows and arrows.‎

Ed Stafford, hailing from Mowsley in Leicestershire, was facilitated with the award at a ‎function organized in his honor at the Wilderness Fair in Stockholm.‎

Mr.Ed Staford had covered more than 6,700 kilo-meters from the Peruvian Andes across ‎Colombia and into Brazil and had provided an insight into the lives of the local people in the ‎endangered rain-forest. The expedition was peculiar in a way that in walking the length of ‎the Amazon river, Ed Staford had shared his exciting experiences and story online, ‎creating an awareness about Amazon itself. This award was also a tribute to all those ‎people who followed Ed’s adventures online, and those who had sent messages of ‎support and money for the charities.‎

A dedicated team of Electrical Engineers from the Illinois University has discovered a ‎method by which mobiles and laptops could operate nonstop 100 times longer between ‎charges. The solution was arrived at by altering the way the digital memory of the device works. ‎

Present generation mobile phone memories contain thin metal wires. Electricity is ‎conducted through them to retrieve the data. ‎The electrical engineers were of the opinion that if the size of the components used to store ‎and retrieve the information could be minimized; the amount of electricity passing ‎through would also diminish. So they came up with the idea of using carbon nano-tubes – ‎tiny tubes that were 10,000 times thinner than a human hair – instead. ‎

The energy consumption is related with the volume of the memory bit. Use of nano-scale ‎contacts, leads to much lower power consumption. It would be wonderful to have devices ‎whose batteries can last for weeks or months. The energy efficiency would be relatively high and ‎power requirements correspondingly very low that the power requirement could be met simply by tapping heat ‎energy, kinetic energy or solar energy in the days to come.‎

IT security solutions provider SecludIT has agreed to partner with Amazon in a bid to ‎release their Elastic Detector for Amazon EC2, which offers a fully automated ‘security ‎threat event detection tool’. ‎

Being a SaaS-based security tool, The Elastic Detector enables administrators and users ‎of Amazon EC2-based infrastructure to detect flaws and threats on security groups and ‎applications continuously, thus considerably reducing the risk of external and internal ‎threats. The solution does not entail management any overhead expenses. ‎The risk of handling dynamic infrastructures, as opposed to the standard static ones, is ‎higher and proportionately the cost of security administration is also high. Manual ‎management of the continuously changing security parameters is difficult. ‎

Elastic Detector on the other hand is built on SecludIT Elastic Security patent pending ‎technology, which acts automatically. The Elastic detector continuously monitors and ‎adapts security related parameters to protect the infrastructure continuously. The tool ‎adopts a feature known as Auto-Checks, which keeps on tracking the security threats and ‎issues timely and corresponding alerts. ‎Other security and monitoring tools, require checks and alerts for each server. In the case ‎of Elastic Detector provided specifically for Amazon EC2, the system is capable of auto-‎detecting all the servers simultaneously and automatically sets the corresponding checks ‎and alerts.‎

SpamExperts, e-mail security provider has entered into an agreement to partner with ‎managed hosting provider Netcetera. It amy be recalled that earlier UK Web host EZPZ ‎Hosting had deployed SpamExperts’ incoming e-mail filers on all their hosting accounts.‎

Netcetera can now offer SpamExpert’s e-mail security solutions to all their customers in ‎order to protect their in-boxes from phishing, spam and virus related attacks. ‎

Netcetera was also a member of the SpamExperts HPP, hence they could offer affordable ‎high quality security products in comparison with their competitors, thus providing total ‎customer satisfaction. Incoming e-mail Security Firewall provided by SpamExperts would ‎prevent spam entering the users’ in-boxes. Consumers need not waste their valuable time ‎manually trying to filter e-mail every day, and consumers could spend their time more ‎effectively by offering value-added products and services to serve their customers. ‎

Netcetera had an built an outstanding reputation as a web hosting solution provider. Their ‎partnership with SpamExperts was a crucial one. E-mail security products tend to be very ‎critical for many business enterprises, because of continuous online presence of hosting ‎providers and Internet Solution Providers in particular. Their concerns had been addressed through this ‎partnership.‎

ITM Power, the renowned energy storage and clean fuel company, has entered into an ‎agreement with UPS to participate in a program known as the Hydrogen On Site Trials ‎‎(HOST) of using the fuel produced at the transportable high pressure re-fuelling unit (HFuel) managed by ITM Power. ‎The HFuel unit was earlier built by ITM with technical support and assistance from the ‎Technology Strategy Board (TSB). The portable unit is capable of producing hydrogen ‎gas on-site by elecrolysing water. The hydrogen gas thus produced is then used to fuel ‎ITM’s prototype HFuel based vehicles.‎

UPS is a well known package delivery company, presently offering services in 220 ‎countries and territories. UPS has deployed 100,000 delivery vehicles worldwide, that ‎includes the largest privately held alternative fuel fleet in the transportation industry, ‎numbering 2,000 vehicles. UPS operates a ‘rolling laboratory’ – to explore the benefits of ‎using alternative-fuel options for the transportation industry. The UPS fleet has over the ‎years accumulated valuable data on the viability of using different fuel options and ‎technologies in the real-world.‎

The addition of UPS to the HOST trials would have significant impact as the data and ‎feedback generated by UPS using the Hfuel would make the HOST program a ‎success.‎

The Cyan Z-series platforms were expected to provide Phoenix NAP with the required ‎high-performance, low-latency dual transport between the two facilities. This was one of ‎the many other carrier connectivity options being considered to be provided in their ‎facilities in 2011.‎

The state-of-the-art Phoenix NAP Data Center was designed by applying the latest ‎available technologies to support disaster recovery systems and to manage instantaneous ‎business continuity of services by providing secure, highly dependable network access ‎solutions. Cyan’s dominant transport solutions provided a rare combination of ultra-low ‎latent transport, desirable architectural scale, and dependable performance, achievable ‎with very simple and flexible operations. The customer services provided by Cyan were ‎very dependable, meeting the diverse needs of various customers while offering lower ‎infrastructure costs.‎

Cyan’s Z-series packet-optical transport solution combined with multi-layer software ‎systems having diverse fiber optic paths enable customer traffic between the two ‎facilities. Phoenix NAP was now better equipped for meeting the needs of their growing ‎customer base. The Company could now deliver high-performing services, with greater ‎visibility and at a lower cost. Cyan’s Z-series platform can also support Ethernet, DWDM ‎and uses wavelength selectable switching mode for handling 10GB Ethernet transport. ‎The platform offers pay-as-you-go functionality.‎

The Company was very thrilled to offer to their customers the perfect cloud hosting ‎solution. Cloud hosting platforms had become the most sought after and leading solutions ‎in Industrial Applications. The Company was well equipped and had the right expertise ‎to manage and also maintain all critically important applications and infrastructures on ‎behalf of their dedicated companies and consumers, worldwide.‎

The company ’s website had adopted Xen Hypervisor for the virtualization ‎platform. There was much to learn about cloud computing, and one could start by using it ‎regularly. Cloud hosting provided on the platform was capable of scaling up to 8 CPUs ‎with 96GB RAM and run virtually on any operating system. The Company also provided ‎High Availability hosting services which had been powered by a load-balanced cluster of ‎servers. Presently only monthly billing was being adopted, based on usage, to their ‎customers. ‎

In the case of a hardware problem, Indsoft has made provisions to automatically shift to ‎the next best server available in the cluster to handle the load. Their program was a 100 ‎percent fault tolerant system with high availability.‎
